Our Music Curriculum

Intent

At Maple Grove Primary School, we encourage every child to become a musician and engage with and enjoy music. We provide a broad and enjoyable experience for children who learn to listen to, appreciate, perform, create, critique, and evaluate a variety of pieces of music. We use our Music scheme of work to support our Music planning and teaching, ensuring that high-quality Music lessons are delivered across the school from EYFS to Year 6. A specialised music teacher teaches music.

Children will develop musical skills by singing, playing tuned and untuned instruments, improvising and composing music, and listening to and responding to music. They will understand the history and cultural context of the music they listen to and learn how music can be written down. The curriculum helps children develop transferable skills such as teamwork, leadership, creative thinking, problem-solving, decision-making, and presentation and performance skills through music. These skills are vital to children’s development as learners and have a broader application in their general lives outside and beyond school.

Our Music scheme of work supports children in meeting the Early Learning Goals for Communication and Language (listening, attention, and understanding) and Expressive Arts and Design (being imaginative and expressive) and the end-of-key-stage attainment targets in the National curriculum.
