Our Design and Technology Curriculum
Intent
At Maple Grove Primary School, we value Design and Technology as a practical, inspiring, and engaging subject. Through creativity and imagination, children design, make, and evaluate products that meet specific design criteria, considering their needs and those of others, including expectations, wants and values. Cooking and nutrition play a vital role in our Design and Technology curriculum. Learning to prepare food and understand a healthy, balanced diet equips children with essential life skills.
The Design and Technology scheme aims to inspire children to become innovative and creative thinkers who appreciate the product design cycle, including ideation, creation, and evaluation. We want children to develop the confidence to take risks by drafting design concepts, modelling, and testing their ideas. Additionally, we encourage them to be reflective learners who assess their work and that of their peers. Through our Design and Technology scheme, we strive to build awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives. We aim to foster resourceful, enterprising citizens with the skills necessary to contribute to future design advancements.
Our Design and Technology curriculum supports children in achieving the Early Learning Goals for Expressive Arts and Design—focusing on creating with materials and being imaginative and expressive—as well as the end-of-key-stage attainment targets outlined in the National Curriculum.
