Our History Curriculum
Intent
At Maple Grove Primary School, we value History as a practical and engaging subject that inspires our children to develop a coherent understanding of Britain’s past and the wider world.
Our History curriculum is designed to inspire children to become curious and creative thinkers. We aim to help them build a deep understanding of local, national, and world History. We want children to gain the confidence to think critically, ask questions, and analyse and explain historical evidence.
Our History curriculum aims to foster an awareness of significant events and individuals in global, British, and local history while recognising how these have evolved. Our approach to History supports children in appreciating the complexity of people's lives, the diversity of societies, and the relationships between different groups. By studying History, children can understand the various reasons behind people's behaviours, which helps them develop empathy for others and learn from humanity's past mistakes.
Our History curriculum is designed to help children build a solid understanding of chronology in each year group. It allows them to connect different periods and develop a secure knowledge of history. The scheme aims to introduce children to key substantive concepts, including power, invasion, settlement and migration, empire, civilisation, religion, trade, and humankind's achievements, society, and culture, to prepare them for their future learning in history.
Our History scheme of work helps children achieve the Early Learning Goals for Understanding the World, which includes aspects of past and present, people, culture, and communities. It also aligns with the end-of-key-stage attainment targets in the National Curriculum. This ensures that high-quality History lessons are delivered throughout the school, from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6.
